To substitute teach in Wyoming, you must apply for a Substitute Teacher Permit. This permit is valid for five years and is renewable. Download application

Requirements for a Wyoming Substitute Teacher Permit
There are two ways to meet the requirements for a substitute teacher permit.
College Credit Path
1. Complete at least 65 semester hours from a regionally accredited college/university
2. Successfully complete the US and Wyoming Constitution courses
3. Submit fingerprints and received a clear background check
4. Submit a complete application packet for a Wyoming Educator Permit
Alternative Path
- Hold a high school diploma or GED
- Complete at least 24 hours of school district in-service training
- Complete at least 10 hours of classroom observation at each grade level you want to substitute teach - elementary, junior high/middle and secondary
- Successfully complete the US and Wyoming Constitution courses
- Submit a complete application packet for a Wyoming Educator Permit
Renewing a Substitute Teacher Permit
In order to renew a substitute teacher permit, you must meet all renewal requirements and submit a Renewal Application to PTSB before the expiration of your current permit. Download renewal application.
There are several options for earning renewal credits:
- Complete course work at a regionally accredited college/university. You may take courses for either a grade or pass/fail
- Attend PTSB approved workshops
- Apply for Individual Professional Development credits
Reinstating a Substitute Teacher Permit
In order to reinstate a lapsed substitute teacher permit, you must have acquired five (5) semester hours of transcript credit or other professional development credit as approved by PTSB. The alternative path is not available as an option for reinstating a lapsed substitute permit if the alternate path was previously used to obtain the initial substitute teacher permit.
